As of two days ago, the grand total of Bruce’s handwritten poems that I have typed is:
1,055.
Here’s the thing. The vast majority of these poems were written in the past ten years, and they are only a fraction of the total he wrote during that time; they’re mostly from parts of 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, and some from 2006-present. One hundred ninety-six of them are from a single one-month period in 2003. There are boxes and boxes from the same time span still to be transcribed, and other boxes from other decades yet to be uncovered. The man has been writing poetry for 50 years.
It’s like one of those contests where you try to guess how many gumballs are inside the jar…only they are works of art and the jar is really, really big…and you have to experience each one to find out how many there are after all…but that is the prize.
